TEACHING - LEARNING PROCESS
- Teaching for the entire semester for a subject is planned meticulously and implemented using lesson plan.
- The internal assessment and conduction of Co-curricular and extra curricular activities are planned and scheduled for the semester in advance. This is communicated to faculty and students as 'Calendar of Events' which helps them to plan their studies and other activities properly.
- Teaching aids include black board, OHP, Power point presentation using LCD.
- Regular Tutorial classes are used to discuss and solve numerical problems and assist them to apply knowledge to real-time problems.
- Subject-wise assignments and study guides are given to students to solve and enrich their knowledge.
- Extra classes are conducted in the identified subjects for weak students.
- For value addition, other than university- prescribed syllabus, student training programmes are conducted within the campus.
- Regular seminars are conducted in most of the subjects prescribed apart from classroom teaching which improves their presentation skills & also better understanding of the subject.
- Teaching is made student centric by getting regular (every fortnight) feed back from the students.
Faculty undergoes self appraisal in order to improve teaching skills and up grade in subject knowledge.
STUDENT COUNSELING
A student counseling mechanism is setup in the Department in order to understand the problems of students both academic and personal. One faculty advisor for every 15 students is allocated, who is responsible for conducting regular meeting with students to get suggestions for improvements in academic and Laboratory facilities. The information obtained from students through faculty advisors is utilized to enhance the quality of academics and laboratories and also solve personal problems of the students. Faculty advisor sends the progress of a student to the parents for information and guidance every month.
Guidelines for Effective Teaching
l. Preparation Phase
- Prepare learning objectives of the subject.
- Refer as many books as possible to give more problems and clear concepts.
- Prepare assignments and schedule for the subject that are to be notified at beginning of course.
- Prepare lecture notes, study guide for each chapter (means exhaustive set of questions and problems) and lesson plan.
- VTU books/guides may not be recommended to students and faculty should not show such books to students.
- In any case, books cannot be taken to classrooms.
- Identify and prepare topics to be given for IA test, which can be notified at the beginning of course/subject.
II. Conduction Phase
- The overall idea of the subject can be briefed at the beginning of a semester to create interest in the subject. Some practical applications may be highlighted.
- Lecture notes and study guide should be supplied to the students before starting a chapter. Notes may also comprise of some solved problems & some unsolved problems from textbooks.
- Students may be asked to prepare their own exhaustive notes referring to the text books and reference books.
- Syllabus coverage should be in-order and there should be continuity of current topic of teaching to the previous unit.
- Stress upon core idea of the topic for more time than the minor details. The students may be made aware of a particular topic by hinting them that it is important.
- For programming oriented subjects such as microprocessors, micro-controllers, DSP, HDL, etc. the programs taught in the class should be executed in the laboratories.
- For numerical oriented subjects such as Network Analysis, Signals and Systems, DSP, Communication (Analog & Digital), Field Theory, Control Systems, Information Theory and coding, Antenna and Propagation, etc, the following methodology may be adopted.
- At least one problem of each type should be solved in classroom.
- Mathematical prerequisite of the subject to be taught before starting the syllabus.
- For diploma holders special classes may be arranged to provide mathematical background of a subject.
- Wide range of previous year's university question paper problems may be solved in classrooms. (Some extra classes may be conducted for this purpose).o
- Assignment problems may include a good mix of solved and unsolved problems from the text book.
- Make first and second test compulsory. If a student remains absent for these tests, ask the students to submit complete class notes and bring their parents/guardian. They may be asked to write solutions for IA test.
- No student should be allowed to enter the classroom after 5 minutes of start of the class (It can be relaxed only under genuine conditions).
- Students having 90 % of attendance are eligible to give feedback in respective subjects.
- •...
- Regular interactions may be encouraged in classrooms.
- Maintain class discipline and identify disturbing people and warn them, if still found disturbing they can be sent out of the class for meeting with HOD/Principal.
- 14. Attendance must be strictly checked. If anybody fails to attend the classes, he/she may be questioned.
- Irregular attendees may be brought to notice of the HOD/Principal every week.
- Teaching should be clear with proper flow, fluency, pauses and voice modulation. Ensure audibility of teaching that reaches to the last bench students.
- Revise the previous class sessions briefly in the class and as well as wind up the class in brief what has been covered in the classrooms.
- Whenever possible, include active learning techniques for 2 or 3 minutes after every 20 minutes
- of the class.
- Balance teaching style so that you teach to almost all types of learners.
- Respond to all questions and do not make fun of any sort of questions.
- Summarize occasionally after lecturing a concept.
- If you are not sure of an answer, do not bluff, get on in later class.
- End lecture on time, erase the black board before you leave the class.
- Black board must be used properly and neatly. Before discussing about the topic, important points may be written on the board. Writing must be clear and legible.
III. Teaching Maintenance
- Connectivity of the subject to the subjects studied in previous semester and the subjects that are going to be studied in future semester should be clearly mentioned during introductory class.
- Subject CR should be nominated and he/she should be in continuous touch for feedback about subject teaching.
- A minute paper test at least after completion of every unit may be taken to identify the understanding of subject.
- Some of the programming experiments may be demonstrated in class room to boost the confidence in conducting experiments.
- Regular class feedback may be taken to orient teaching method as per the student requirements.
- Weaker students may be monitored for their progress in learning the topics.
- If students continuously feel that you are unable to convince them, take the help of friend or a senior colleague to identify your problems. This can be done by making your colleague to attend the class.
- To improve your teaching, you may sit- for some of your colleagues classes who have better appreciation from students in teaching. Some of the good teaching skills can be incorporated from them.
- Sometimes, be humorous to students by cracking jokes that may be related to topics while discussing a concept.
- Prepare demos wherever possible either physical or computer based. For example PSPICE may be used to illustrate the concepts of analog electronics.
- Prepare lots of visuals wherever required; they can be based on OHP, if LCD projector is not available.
- Plan demonstration wherever required and also may take for some industrial tours. Give physical analogy for the concepts which will help the students to visualize the core working of the concept.
- Give handouts with gaps for solving the problems.
- Question bank comprising entire syllabus to be prepared in two categories: (a) Class work and (b) Home work. Class work problems can be solved in classrooms taking one extra tutorial class for every 4 theory classes.
IV. Paper Setting and Evaluation
- The syllabus for the test must be given at least 15 days in advance along with study guide.
- The students must be trained to answer the questions based on the marks assigned for a question.
- Writing skills in examinations must be taught; answer must be to the point, use figures, use bulleted points, underline the important keywords and numerical, box the equations, legible writing, writing correct question numbers, attempting the questions even though out of syllabus, writing continuous answer, assuming missing data, etc.
- Questions should assess the core idea of a topic. The questions must be of different types such as; recalling, analytical, design and thinking.
- To the extent possible, avoid questions that start with explain, describe, discuss, etc., instead they should start with what, when, how, why, etc.
- For numerical oriented subjects, at least 50% of the questions should include problems.
- Evaluation scheme should be prepared in detail clearly indicating the marks allocation for each step
- Evaluation should be fair and impartial.
- Scheme and evaluation procedure should be clearly known to the students.
- Questions must be specific and may be in parts in a single question that makes the job easier to know the answers.
General Guidelines for Conduction of Laboratories Preparation
Segregate the given set of experiments into 3 or 4 cycles, each cycle comprising of 3 or 4 experiments.
- For hardware labs, faculty and staff must prepare the manual for each experiment comprising of: Title, aim, components used and purpose, equipments used and purpose, circuit diagram, circuit design, theory (principles, working and applications), conduction procedure, results (tabular column, calculations, graphs), conclusions and viva questions.
- For software labs, faculty and staff must prepare the manual for each experiment comprising the following. Title, program statement, interfaces and software used and purpose, flowchart/algorithm, program with comments, results with specified input and output, conclusions and viva questions.
- Suitable steps for debugging the circuit/program must also be supported within the manual.
- All the experiments must be carefully and personally tested by the lab faculty and instructors before the commencement of the lab,
Conduction
- Students must be given enough instructions about the experiments cycle wise before conduction of the experiment.
- Students must be told in advance about the experiment they will be conducting. They must be asked to come prepared for the experiment.
- The instructors must ensure the correctness of equipments and components or machines before the conduction of the lab.
- Faculty and staff must check the preparedness of students for the experiment by asking questions as given in the manual.
- If a student is prepared, he/she may be allowed to perform the experiment. Otherwise, ask the student to prepare then and there itself.
- Faculty and staff must continuously move around the students and interact with them. Faculty and staff should not indulge in class/personal work preparation in the lab hours.
- Faculty and staff must assist the students in debugging the experiment and make them aware of the functioning of the circuit, components and program.
- The calculations and graphs must be done immediately after the experiment is done and must be signed by the lab faculty/staff.
- Faculty/staff must check the entry of previous experiment in the record and evaluate it. 10 marks can be allotted for each experiment. It can be awarded based on preparedness, conduction, discipline and record completion.
- If any of the students are consistently not preparing and keeping the records incomplete must be seriously warned and fined. It may be brought to the notice of HOD and Principal.
- Faculty must spend more time with students in the lab. Limit the timings for corrections of records and miscellaneous activities.
- After every cycle, extra labs may be arranged for repetition or missing experiments during evening hours.
- A minute paper test can be performed to get the feedback about the labs. Even, CRs or some regular students may be consulted about the progress of the lab.
