Sunilkumar S. Manvi, received B.E. Degree from Karnataka University, M.E. degree in Electronics from the University of Visweshwariah College of Engineering, Bangalore, Ph.D degree in Electrical Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He is currently working as a Dean (Research and Development), Professor and Head of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, REVA Institute of Technology and Management, Bangalore, India.  

He is involved in research of Agent based applications in Multimedia Communications, Grid computing, Ad-hoc networks, E-commerce and Mobile computing. He has published over 100 papers in national and international conferences,  50 papers in national and international journals, and 10 publications as books/book-chapters. He is   Fellow IETE (FIETE, India), Fellow IE (FIE, India) and Member ISTE (MISTE, India ), Member of IEEE (MIEEE, USA), He has been listed in Marqui's Who’s Who in the World and IBC Biographee.

He is reviewer for nearly more than 25 international/national reputed Journals. Some of the Journals which he has reviewed are Elsevier Journal of system software, Elsevier E-commerce research applications, Elsevier Information Sciences, Elsevier Computer Networks, ETRI Journal,  Inderscience  Journal on Agent oriented Software Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics, World scientific Journal on Fuzzy and Knowledge based systems and Journal of Indian Institute of Science.  

He has been reviewer, session chair and programme committee member for more than 35  national/international conferences. Some of conferences where he was programme committee member are as follows. He is member of Board of studies (2007 to 2010, 2010-2013), Visweshwariah Technical University, Belgaum, member of Board of studies (2007 to 2010), Kuvempu, University, member of PG Board of studies (2004:2006), Bangalore University. He is a member of Board of Examiners for VTU, Belgaum, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Goa University, Goa. He has presented many invited talks (nearly more than 50) at various polytechnics, engineering colleges, national and international seminars. 

He has conducted several national workshops and seminars for faculty and students.  He has been a University Nominee for staff selection in engineering colleges and also has been NBA committee member and LIC committee member of VTU. He has conducted several workshops, seminars and conferences for faculty/students and researchers sponsored by AICTE New Delhi, CSIR New Delhi, VTU Belgaum,  TEQIP funds, and Engineering colleges.  He has executed several research projects sponsored by VTU and AICTE worth Rs. 50.00 lakhs.

To produce engineers having good understanding of Electronics and Communication Engineering, ethical practices, automation design and innovation skills and entrepreneurship abilities.

INTRODUCTION OF THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established in the year 2004 with an intake of 60 and was enhanced to 90 and 120 in the years 2005 and 2006, respectively. Department has well qualified and experienced teaching faculty and technical staff with state of the art laboratories to meet the quality education required for present challenging societal and industrial needs. Department is involved in research activities in the areas of Ubiquitous/Pervasive computing technologies, Intelligent Agent Technologies, Computational Intelligence Applications, Image Processing and Database Management. Most of the students are well placed in reputed industries as well as continuing higher education in the premier institutes. Department is actively involved in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities with associations and professional bodies.

FACILITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Department has very good infrastructure comprising of separate space for different laboratories. Some of the laboratories are Computer-Programming Lab, Data Structures Lab, Database Management Lab, System Programming Lab, Microprocessor/Microcontroller Lab, Computer Networks Lab, Java Programming Lab, Project Lab and Research Lab. The total carpet area of the Department is around 1000 sq. meters. Computing facilities comprises of 175 (Pentium IV) computers with Linux/Windows XP operating system, application, and simulation and system software's.


Library

Department of CSE include 697 numbers of Book titles and 3245 numbers of Book volumes in the main Library. Department has access to online journals and transactions through IEL online subscriptions. Apart from on-line subscription, Department also subscribes hard copies of some of the National and International Journals/ Magazines like ACM communications, ACM transactions on Information Systems, IEEE transactions on Software Engineering, CSI journal etc. Digital library facility is available in main Library to facilitate information access from Internet and Intranet.

Campus Network

The Institute and Department are well connected through a Campus Network and have an access to an Internet at data rate of 4Mbps. All the machines in the Laboratories are connected to campus network.

Department has well qualified and experienced staff with an average teaching experience of about 12 years. There are Professors with Doctoral degree and Post Graduate degree, 5 Assistant professors, 1 senior lecturer and 5 Lecturers. Some of the faculty members have registered for Ph. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The faculties in the Department are actively involved in Research and Development. The areas of research are Ubiquitous/Pervasive computing technologies, Intelligent Agent Technologies, Computational Intelligence Applications, Image Processing and Database Management. Department faculties have published around 30 journal papers, 80 conference papers and 07 books at National/International Level.

Faculty and Staff Development Activities

The faculties are encouraged to attend conferences, workshops, short-term courses to upgrade their knowledge. The Department also plans to organize STTP (proposal submitted to ISTE) on "Wireless Communications" and National conference on "Computer Networks" during coming semesters (proposal submitted to AICTE and CSIR). The Department encourages Technical staff to attend laboratory related workshops that are required to upgrade their knowledge. Faculty and Technical staff are also encouraged to pursue their higher education with salary and leave benefits.

Student Counseling

A student counseling mechanism is setup in the Department in order to understand the problems of students both academic and personal. One faculty advisor for every 15 students is allocated, who is responsible for conducting regular meeting with students to get suggestions for improvements in academic and Laboratory facilities. The information obtained from students through faculty advisors is utilized to enhance the quality of academics and laboratories and also solve personal problems of the students. Faculty advisor sends the progress of a student to the parents for information and guidance every month.

Department Associations and Student Development Activities

Department has setup an association called ETHICS (Enigmatic Technicians Hub of Information & Computer Science) that is responsible for conducting co-curricular and extra curricular activities at Department/Institute/Regional Level. Some of the activities conducted are Technical paper presentation, C Programming contest, Einstein's birthday celebration, Quiz competition, Seminars and Invited talks, Workshops on state-of-art Industrial tools & Programming languages. Department faculty and students were instrumental in organizing an intercollegiate Technical fest "REVAMP08" during April 2008.

Professional Bodies

Faculties of department are members of various professional bodies like CSI, IETE, IEEE & ISTE. The membership will help the faculty to be in phase with Technology by attending seminars conducted by professional bodies. CSI student chapter was established in October 2007 to enhance student activities by conducting Technical talks on emerging areas of Information and Communication Technologies. The various activities conducted in student chapter are Image Processing, Java Technologies, etc.

Training and Placement Activities

Department supports training and placement cell of Institute to conduct Programmes on latest Technologies, Personality Development and training for competitive exams. Students of the department are placed in reputed companies such as L & T, Carritor, Sonata, Subex, Sapient, Tech Mahindra, Microsoft, I-gate, Sasken etc. 90% of the eligible students are placed in the campus interviews.

To support Industry-Institute interaction, Institution has memorandum of understanding with the following companies:

  • Oracle Corporation: Conducts Oracle DBA and ERP courses for students and staff.
  • EMC2: Trains faculties on Storage Technologies.
  • Thinksoft: Is the industry on campus to provide a platform for students to carry out industry oriented projects.
  • Sun-Micro Systems: Conducts training for faculties on Sun Java Technologies and Open Solaris.
  • Microsoft: Facilitates Students projects.

Innovative Practices

  • Assignments are given at the end of each chapter and assessed for student documentation skills.
  • Regular monitoring of project works by project monitoring committee constituted under Head of the Department.
  • Quiz will be conducted at the end each chapter in order to refresh the content of a chapter.
  • Concepts are demonstrated through Physical models and Simulation models.
  • Seminars are given by Faculty members every fortnight to impart latest developments in Information Technologies.
  • Subject Instructors will discuss about recent articles for 10 minutes about the subject in every class to impart knowledge beyond curriculum.

The faculty of departments are actively participating in National / International Conferences at various capacities such as Programme committee members, Reviewers, Organizers, etc. Some of the faculty are reviewers for reputed National / International Journals (Elsevier, IEEE, WorldScientific, Kluwer, IOS, Inderscience publishers, etc.), Member of Board of Studies, Members of Board of Examiners, etc., Invited talks and seminars are given by department faculty at various places during short term courses, guest lectures and conferences.
