MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to educate, prepare, and mentor students to graduate as professional and to grow throughout their careers in order to meet the competitive global market Utilize technology for the progress of mankind being frontier in teaching, engineering principles, research and development.

LONG TERM GOALS

  • To pursue excellence in research and technology transfer in order to achieve centre of excellence in the field of bio fuels, materials and its coatings, rapid prototyping, industrial engineering etc..
  • Recruit and retain high quality faculty members with interests in variety of areas of mechanical engineering.
  • Attain national recognition as an active engineering department.
  • To establish job oriented continuous training centre for graduate and diploma students collaborate with industry and other university in light of exchanging ideas.

INTRODUCTION OF THE DEPARTMENT

Mechanical Engineering Department of Reva Institute of Technology started functioning from the year 2004 with a sanctioned intake of 60 students per annum. The focus of the department is to offer quality education in the specialized fields of Design, Manufacturing, Thermal and Materials engineering. The might of the Department, apart from its Students, is its Qualified and Experienced Faculty/Staff. The faculty strength includes 5 doctorates working as professors and assistant professors and 8 faculties pursuing PhD in NIT’s, VTU and Bangalore University. Faculties are actively engaged in Teaching and mentoring students apart from perusing their research activities in the emerging fields of engineering, extending consultancy activities with the manufacturing environment and also established mutually rewarding professional relationships with many a leading R&D Labs/Research Institutions. VTU has granted research centre status on 22-04-2009 to the department credit. The department results have progressively increased by year to year. The Department has also submitted the Proposal for the grant of research project under various research grants scheme to establish advanced facilities in the area of thermal and materials research. The department has published the research work in various international and national communities. The department has on campus industry Viz. Metro Mechanical manufacturing Company. It is engaged in industrial research activities & Fabrication of equipments to give industrial exposure to students. The main objective of on campus industry is to promote “Earn while learn program”.

The department is constantly updating the infrastructure and laboratory facilities as per the present scenario. The department has equipped with Five classrooms, 11 laboratory halls, one staff room, one seminar hall, departmental library etc. The total carpet area of department is about 2702 sq. mtrs. The department is also equipped with modern teaching aids like LCD’s, smart boards etc.

HUMAN RESOURCES

The department has well qualified and experienced faculties with an average teaching experience of more than 12 years, with 1 Professor, 6 Asst. Professors, 2 Senior Lecturers, and 6 Lecturers, 1 dedicated programmer, 1 Foremen, 4 Instructors, and 4 Lab Attenders are provided in Laboratories for assisting students and Faculties.

To focus on individual student and monitor their academic performance and provide assistance to their personal problems, a mentor scheme is adapted with 15 students under each faculty. The department organizes regularly the parent – teacher meeting to discuss academic issues and progress of the students with their parents.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The faculties in the department are actively involved in research and development and have published around 150 technical articles in international / national journals and conferences. The major research areas are

  • Developing alternative fuels with special focus on non edible vegetable oils for IC engines.
  • Design and Development of composite coating by thermal spray technique in improving resistance to wear, erosion, oxidation and hot corrosion
  • Thermodynamic modeling and computer simulation of various nano composite oxide films
  • Developing pure and composite films by MOCVD , characterization and investigation of mechanical properties.
  • Process parameter optimization for betterment of part quality (General Purpose machine and Rapid Prototyping). Optimization by ANN tool, grey relational analysis and multiple parameter tunning.
  • General solution to stresses involved in machine components
  • Passive cooling of buildings, Energy management in process industries

 Aaryan Racing Project

The Aaryan Racing Team, formulated by the students of Mechanical Department is participating in the world level Formula SAE competition organized by Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE) International. The Team headed by L.R Jagadeesh and Raju B.S, have begun to roll the dice for this endeavor.


Department Associations


The Mechanical Association For Intellectual Achievers (MAFIA) is the association of the students of Mechanical Engineering Department whose main objective is to nurture the talents of the students in both academic and non academic matters. The association organizes different types of extra curricular activities and co-curricular activities like Paper Presentation, seminars, invited talks by the people from industry and academic institutions.

Activities

  • Mechathlon, Intercollegiate Technical Paper Presentation will be conducted under Mechanical Students Chapter every year.
  • The department is tied up with India Society for Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineer (ISHRAE) for training & Placement of Mechanical students in the field of refrigeration &Air conditioning.
  •  Training on Mechanical software CATIA, HYPERMESH and ANSYS conducted by Swamy Design Solutions Pvt. Ltd for the duration of 3 months.
  • Training program on “Basics on Hydraulics and Pneumatics” & “Basics on Industrial Robotics” at VTU – Bosch Rexroth Centre of Competence in Automation Technology, Mysore.

STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Mr. Manish Soni got 1st Prize in Paper publication at PES college of Engg, Mandya.
  • Ms. Roshni Menon & Mr. Manish Soni got 1st Prize in State Level Paper Presentation at Reva ITM, on 17th April 2009.
  • Ganesh .R. Murugandam, got best Outgoing Student award.
  • Bineesh V.D., Gaurav Dixit and M. Shaheer, have been granted a fund for carrying out final year project from KSCST. The project has been selected for presentation during 32nd series of Student Projects Programme Seminar-cum-Exhibition: 2008-2009 held at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Mangalore. 
  •  Yathindra.R., Srinivas Murthy .T., Sharth Kumar and Vinay S.H. have been granted a fund for carrying out final year project from KSCST.

 


Industry- Institute Interaction

  • Teaching for the entire semester strictly according to lesson plan prepared well at the beginning of the semester.
  • Continuous assessment of Student performance & conduction of co-curricular and extra curricular activities.
  • Effective teaching using aids includes Black Boards, OHP, LCD projectors etc.
  • Some of the subjects which are of main concern & difficult are taken care by allotting extra classes in the time table.
  • Regular Training on Mechanical software CATIA, HYPERMESH and ANSYS conducted by SDS Pvt. Ltd for the duration of 3 months.

STUDENT COUNSELING
A student counseling committee has been formed in order to understand the grievances of the students of both academic and personal issues. Each faculty, counsel 15 students. The academic performances, behavior and regularity of the student to the classes are monitored closely, based on which students are counseled. Further the matter will be reported to centralized student welfare wing committee.
